Jake Bates

I’ve always been drawn to the water, so it is a good thing that I was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida.  It is also pretty clutch that I was blessed with a family that loves fishing.  At 17 years old, I realize how fortunate that I am to have experienced catching fish ranging from king salmon in Alaska, to sailfish in Costa Rica, and just about everything in between.  And while any day and anywhere on the water is a good day, my favorite days have always been in my kayak.

About four years ago, my dad and I decided that we might enjoy kayak fishing.  We hunted down and purchased two used Ocean Kayak Prowler 13s.  As soon as I hit the water “we might enjoy kayak fishing” turned into “I might never go home.”  Finally, we didn’t have to wait on the tides to turn to get to the spots that we wanted to fish.  We now had freedom to explore our own spots.  It is always fun to fish with family and friends in a boat, but in a kayak we can break off and explore new spots.  Fishing freedom at last!

Athletics are pretty important in my family, so the exercise that goes along with kayaking is such a big plus.  My dad was an All SEC linebacker and captain of the 1996 National Champion Florida Gator football team.  My mom was an All American and 4x SEC Champion swimmer at UF.  Even my two younger sisters are great swimmers.  I play baseball and swim.  I won the High School city meet in the 50 freestyle and competed in the state finals.  My parents have always said “hard work pays off.”  That is probably why my favorite thing about kayak fishing is that it is so rewarding.

Even my activities away from fishing tend to be fishing related.  I tie flies and recently fulfilled an order of twelve dozen custom flies, for a couple to use on their fly-fishing trip to Argentina.  I raise chickens, so I am working on creating new flies from the feathers of some of our birds.  This past fall, I helped to create my high school’s first fishing club.

I am truly honored to be a member of the Johnson Outdoors team.  See you on the water!
