Zach Sheller

Home Base: Downeast Maine - home to the last remaining wild Atlantic salmon in the United States

Favorite Boat:
My favorite boats are Old Town Discovery and Tripper Canoes.  These are stable boats that allow us to load all sorts of gear into them including: people, electrofishing backpacks, coolers full of Atlantic salmon to stock, etc...  Perhaps the other most valuable feature of these boats is their durability.  Year after year we run them down the rivers; bouncing, scraping and dragging them across rocks and these boats continue to perform.

About me:
My name is Zach Sheller and I live in Downeast Maine working for the Downeast Salmon Federation (DSF), whose mission is as follows: To conserve wild Atlantic salmon, other sea-run fish and their habitats, restore a viable recreational salmon fishery and protect other important river, scenic, recreational and ecological resources in eastern Maine.

I have been involved with salmon, habitat, and other fisheries restorations in Downeast Maine off and on since 2004, when I had an college internship with the Atlantic Salmon Commission (presently Maine Department of Marine Fisheries).  DSF is a grassroots organization that is restoring the salmon runs of Maine through holistic river restoration.  This includes fish stock, passage (dams and culverts), habitat improvements, and a tremendous amount of outreach with the local communities.  We were started by fishermen who wanted (and still do) to fish for Atlantic salmon again.  Downeast Maine is a beautifully rural place to spend hours that you aren't working fishing, hunting, hiking, and paddling...fortunately some days I get to do such activities as part of my job.

Please enjoy the pictures, videos, and stories.  Also check out our website and/or social media pages.  Happy fishing!
