Mission - Temperature Logger

Yet another beautiful morning on the water of Downeast Maine.  Although the weather couldn't quite make up its mind, the rain held off until after our 9 mile paddle to collect temperature loggers from the East Machias River.

Atlantic salmon, being a cold water salmonid, prefer (and thrive) in cooler waters.  Placing temperature loggers throughout a watershed for a particular river can help pinpoint areas that would be more beneficial to salmon.  These cooler areas typically are shaded by trees, have spring seeps, and faster flowing water.

Gathering data from temperature loggers, smolt trapping, and electrofishing are all ways to help us here at the Downeast Salmon Federation adapt our restoration efforts to effectively benefit Atlantic salmon.
